Habitat use as indicator of adaptive capacity to climate change

چکیده
Aim Populations of cold-adapted species at the trailing edges geographic ranges are particularly vulnerable to negative effects climate change from combination exposure warm temperatures and high sensitivity heat. Many these predicted decline under future scenarios, but they could persist if can adapt warming climates either physiologically or behaviourally. We aim understand local variation in contemporary habitat use this information identify signs adaptive capacity. focus on moose (Alces alces), a charismatic conservation public interest. Location The northeastern United States, along edge range North America. Methods compiled data occurrences remote cameras GPS collars across States. build suitability models regional spatial scales then predict change. also fine-scale model relationships between temperature daily temporal scale use. Results find that for will scenarios. However, region differ their climatic space, indicating exhibit evidence behavioural responses weather, where increase forested wetland habitats warmer places and/or times. Main conclusions Our results suggest there be significant shifts distribution due is thermal tolerance, trailing-edge populations highlight prioritizing certain (i.e., refuges) crucial adaptation.

Earth as Humans’ Habitat: Global Climate Change and the Health of Populations
Human-induced climate change, with such rapid and continuing global-scale warming, is historically unprecedented and signifies that human pressures on Earth’s life-supporting natural systems now exceed the planet’s bio-geo-capacity. The risks from climate change to health and survival in populations are diverse, as are the social and political ramifications. Although attributing observed health...

متن کاملQuestioning the use of an amphibian colour morph as an indicator of climate change.
The effects of recent climate changes on earth ecosystems are likely among the most important ecological concerns in human history. Good bioindicators are essential to properly assess the magnitude of these changes. In the last decades, studies have suggested that the morph proportion of the eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), one of the most widely distributed and abundant vert...
متن کاملDynamics of habitat changes as a result of climate change in Zagros Mountains Range (Iran), a case study on Amphibians
Climate change is currently considered a serious threat for many species and recognized as one of the most important factors in the global biodiversity loss. Among animal groups, amphibians are known to be among the most sensitive groups of vertebrates to climate change due to their inability to travel long distances, and mountain habitat species are more exposed to climate change pressures tha...
متن کاملImproving the community-temperature index as a climate change indicator
Climate change indicators are tools to assess, visualize and communicate the impacts of climate change on species and communities. Indicators that can be applied to different taxa are particularly useful because they allow comparative analysis to identify which kinds of species are being more affected. A general prediction, supported by empirical data, is that the abundance of warm-adapted spec...
